ACHAIA CLAUSS is located on the hill of the same name and was founded in 1861 by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss, who came to Patras in 1854 to work for a German raisin export company. On one of his excursions he met the area and was impressed by the enchanting landscape and its vineyard. Initially he bought a vineyard of just 60 acres and finally created the Castle-Winery that is preserved to this day. Since 1861 he has been making wine.
The sweet red wine first produced by Gustav Clauss in 1873, in his vineyard, was named "Mavrodafni", in honor of his Greek beloved with beautiful black eyes, Daphne, who died at a young age. Gustav Clauss is considered the founder and founder of the institution of Wine Tourism in Greece, after the visit of Princess Sissy of Austria-Hungary in 1885, for whose sake he named the Cellar "Imperial" (Imperial Cellar).
The stone buildings, the castle, the large oak carved barrels with Mavrodafni of a century, the traditional Cellar for the reception of visitors, the new museum space "Varelatiko", but also the unique landscape with the stunning view, attract thousands of visitors every year.
